How the alternative energy investments are being funded and by whom?

Universally

British Petroleum is the number one company for alternative energy. There is also FCEL (which ran the Democratic convention on hydrogen ran generators) and PLUG.

although gas and oil companys and governments have all made gestures towards greener fuels and are throwing some money at the idea essentially it has and always will be funded by us, the consumer as we have no alternative.

This is a difficult one. As far as the UK goes most are being funded from Europe and outside the UK.

There are far too many investment bodies involved throughout the world, to name them all.
If you type "global alternative energy funding" into your search bar you will find thousands of results

There are only two ways of funding an investment, debt and equity. The vast majority of new ventures are funded via equity. By whom? Pretty much anyone, from high net worth individuals to venture capital funds and private equity funds.
