I'm currently temping and working with a lady who is very quiet. She doesn't say much? |
I will be sharing the office with her for the next few weeks. She is very pleasant and always calls me 'angel', 'sweetie' etc. I have tried to make small talk with her, but it doesn't lead anywhere. We're complete opposites too. She's very worldly and I'm not. Shall I just let the conversation come from her now and respect the fact she just wants to be quiet? Sometimes, the silence between us is difficult. We do have a radio on by the way. We've nothing in common. I do like her, but I don't know what to say/behave. sounds like it could be much, much worse. just relax and don't worry about the silence. you are the visitor, so to speak, and you have to adapt to the existing work environment. You answered your own question, just think about the money and respect her needs, thats the marking of a good temp, being able to fit in with the people who are already there. just get on with your work - im sure if she wants to talk she will. does she watch anything on TV? i find TV stuff usually gets people talking - people always seem to have an opinion on the latest BB or Jade Goody! You're there to work not make friends (as my bosses always told me). Be patient, let her make the first move on conversation, don't push her, or there'll be allot of awkward moments, making working with her more difficult. Be grateful - she could have been a fluffy headed chatterbox! The important thing is to be yourself. Find out what her interests may be and strike up a conversation. People tend to open up when you smile and show your qualities about yourself. Listening is sometimes even better than talking. It gives the other person a way to express themselves. Now I know that she is quiet, so you can only initiate conversation. If she wants to be quiet, then you need to keep busy with your work and let her be. Hope this helps. a few weeks ago weren't you complaining about nosey people?by pestering her did you ever wonder if she could be thinking the same thing? |
