How can a young man fund a start-up?

I wish to start my own business, however I estimate it will cost anywhere between 拢5k to 拢20k to get up and running. At 22, I don't have this amount of cash in my possession, so what can I do to fund the start-up? My thoughts are:

- Business loan (Would this require security against my home, though?)
- Support from family / friends
- Business angel / venture capitalist (not a dead cert by any means)

Where else could I source the money I need?

Why would you need anything upto 拢20k to get started? I dont know what you do at the moment, but what I do know is that the less you layout in the beginning, the better. Instead of jumping in at the deep end, and borrowing that kind of dough, try and start off on a shoestring, and build upto it. You have got time on your side. The experience you gain in that year or so will be the grounding you need for the bigger venture. Plus any mistakes made and learnt from arent going to cost you, you'll recover from them. Im not saying dont go for it, im just advising you that to borrow that kind of money from the outset, little experience, you cant afford to get it wrong, you'll find it very difficult to recover.

Hi Jonny - Wherever you source the money you need to prepare a good 'business plan'.
If you can present a good case to the bank, your loan won't necessarily require security but it would probably be at a higher rate of interest.
Family and friends - THIS is a good way to lose both.
Angel/Venture capitalists will almost certainly want a 'big slice of the cake'.
You could make it a joint venture and form a partnership. There may be someone that would join you in your venture and perhaps bring additional skills, that you may not have, to the business.
Be very wary of 'Loan Companies', as advertised on TV and in newspapers, they can be a very expensive way of borrowing money.
Finally, and I should have put this at the beginning.
I'm assuming you are in the UK.
Contact your local 'Business Link', they'll probably be in the phone book, or you will be able to get their details from the local Chamber of Trade/Commerce.
You can arrange a couple of free sessions with an advisor at Business Link. You can talk through your ideas with him/her and you wil get a lot of very useful information, including details of raising finance.
I MAY have a copy of a business plan that I prepared some time ago that, IF I can find the floppy it's on, will give you some idea of what is expected. Alternatively, you can Google 'Business Plan' and you'll find plenty info there.
If you want a copy of my business plan, and IF I can find it, just mail me and I'll send it to you.
If you Google it you will probably find the prospect of producing a business plan overwhelming. Don't worry too much about it, just break the whole process down into small pieces, this makes it much easier to do.
