How does one "trademark" an item without proof? like a angel?

According to the article, the church has a "Registered Trademark" on the angel.

Once the US Patent and Trademark Office has issued a "registration" on a design, it is entitled to use the 庐 symbol. And, once that happens, anyone who uses the registered mark without permission is subject to being forced to pay monetary damages to the owner of the registered trademark.

(This doesn't address your real question -- "how does one 'trademark' an item without proof"? In order to get the 庐, the owner of the design has to provide some degree of proof that is has the right to own the trademark.)
