Depending upon how much money you need, you may also shoot for a little more low-hanging fruit - that is, develop some relationships with the local accountants and attorneys. They'll often represent high net-worth clients, some of which may be interested in venture deals. The accountant/lawyer route is great for, say, raising $500,000 - $1,000,000 in incremenets of $50,000 or so.

Consult and attorney who is experienced in securities law if you are approaching individuals (via accountants or on your own). You are selling part of your company to investors and are subject to various laws.
