What happened to our economy?

It is ruined... I have a college degree in business, I'm deep in debt with $40,000 in student loans that are accruing more interest daily, and I've never felt so economically disadvantaged in my life... I made really good money in the 90's before I ever went to college, but I'm dirt poor now and trying like hell to avoid bankruptcy.

The only job I've been able to find pays commission only and I earned only $33,500 last year- $15,000 of which had to go for travel expenses which are a condition of my employment with the company... My life savings is gone trying to feed my family.. This is not the America I was once so proud to be a part of...

Oh yeah, and from what I hear the 'recession' hasn't even started yet. :(

I think that two things have happened. Greed is first. When the housing market over-inflated, it was one of the worst things that could happen to us. Now people are living in new homes that are worth far less than they paid for with mortgages that they can't afford. A very large percentage of Americans are also greedily using up the oil reserves by insisting upon driving cars that get ten miles per gallon of gas. Why do people need driveways full of SUV's that guzzle the gas? I have friends who drive them and bought them for all their teenage children.

The other problem, in my opinion, is that the rest of the world knows that the US will pay anything for oil. There is no price that's too high. Why would OPEC increase production when they can make $100 per barrel because stupid Americans won't conserve and drive the prices down?
