How effective is Google's Adwords for receiving new clients, and for generating new business?

I recently placed an ad through Google's Adwords. So far, I am not impressed. Maybe I am not investing enough money per day, or perhaps I am on the wrong site. Any good ideas about how to utilize Adwords to the fullest?

Also look at:
1) when your ads show
2) what sites your ads show on
3) what geography your ads show in
4) your placement
5) your competitors placement
6) negative keywords
7) broad vs phrase vs exact match

To find the answers you must test, test, test.

Think about the "key words" that you are using. The landing pages that those "key words" drive consumers and the corresponding messaging that drives people to convert.

Google AdWords is great....Try MSN Search as well.

What 'lxi' above says is right, plus you'll really need to do your homework to see where your competitors rank - check out their sites and search for keywords they are using as well. Do a search for a particular kw you are interested in and see who comes up on the left (free) side in Google - that's where you ultimately want to be. Check the first 5 or so and dig into their sites keywords AND PAGE CONTENT too.

Forget MSN AdCenter - if your site content is good, you'll have a free listing there faster than you would on Google (same - pretty fast free listing on Yahoo too).

One last thing - it's going to cost you (depending on your kw competitiveness). But don't try to be first - set a goal to be listed 3 -5 on any page. People usually just click to "shop around" and that's wasted money!

how skilful you are at finding the lucrative keywords

You have it a bit wrong.....Its You that is effective or Not. You have to research the keywords and keyword phrases that people are actually typing into thier search engines then put yourself infront of them....you have to select the right title and link for your ad...you have to study your competition and whats already working....invest in perry marshall adwords book or dayjobkiller or affiliate project x these books show you how to snipe already successful google ads....google ads are the best way to experiment with what works because its so fast...almost instant results....dont even think about the money think about how effective each ad is by testing. Believe it or not..the most successful adwords campaigns pay the least amount per click and get the best placings. You are on the right track but you need to do your homework ok? Good luck!
