I am thinking of investing 10k in sole trader business?

The person wants me to invest 10k in his business, for which he will give me 30% equity. I want someone to tell me what steps i can take to protect my investment?

If you are in the UK don't bother. Blair wants us out of our own homes into rented, he wants us out of cars and walking. He wants nobody indipendant. He wants us to be serfs again beholden to the masters.

Be carefull . insist on a limited company , there are reasons,

30% equity doesn't really mean much in a sole trader business. There is no share capital and no obligation to prepare a balance sheet. Typically, it can be hard or impossible to say if a particular asset owned by the sole trader forms part of the business or not.

You should make sure the loan is secured - perhaps a mortgage on the sole traders house. You should insist on a proper amount of interest being paid - as I say 30% equity means nothing.

You need to think to yourself, is his business really worth 拢33,300? Is a business with so little capital viable? Why isn't he borrowing money from a bank?

First satisfy yourself that you are dealing with an industrious honest person you can like.

Then ask to see his income tax return for last year to estimate how much income your investment will give you.

Then you need a security for your investment, eg against his shop, house, etc.

If all the above are satisfactory, you are reasonably safe to go ahead.

I would add the importance of a shareholder agreement which would lay out the duties and responsibilities, salary, dividend policy, spending rules, who has sign off etc

what will your involvement be. passive, part time or are you buying yourself a Directorship

10k doesnt seem that much, where is this money going to be spent (an accountant will be500-1500 pa), some businesses can be bootstrapped but if the cash burn is high, there will be a further finance need soon.

...will this investment get the business to be cash positive, it will be able to continue, if not there is another cash injection needed, if that doesn't happen you will have lost it all
