I have some advice for you if you decide its stocks you want to invest in.

In the stock market no matter how cheap a stock looks it can get cheaper if the sector as a whole is going negative.

What you really need to do is focus on stocks in hot Sectors.

Currently the hot sectors are COAL & Agriculture

One Coal name to look at is FDG

One Agriculture name to look at is CF

I started out with a sum of money just like yourself, I wanted to invest it but had no idea how to even go about investing in markets. If it is completely free money--i.e. not needed for any thing else in the next five years, why not invest into one of the UK banks? Lloyds(8% ish yield) Barclays(Robust performance in a difficult market) RBOS, HBOS Check out the yields plus should get decent growth over long term
