when you say business - I'm assuming you're thinking of a store that sells products. I would not go that route.
$50K is really not a lot of money unless you live in India.
It would be very hard for you to even buy a franchise.
If you don't want to invest in the stock market - you could always invest in real estate. One smart way to do this is to buy a fixer-upper, put some money into it and resell it. You wouldn't be able to buy the property outright for $50K (in most cities) - but you could put a down a nice down-payment, have funds left over to make mortgage payments and fix-up costs. Some folks like to buy a small rental unit (like a 2-flat in the Midwest) and have the people renting pay enough to pay mortgage, taxes and upkeep. This technically isn't a business, but it is an investment.
Other things you can do is buy collectibles and resell them. Folks have made good money buying antique cars, animation cells, vintage clothes and dishes, and reselling them like on E-bay for a good profit. Again, it's not a business that you're buying but a business you're starting.
The truth is, other than casinos, there are very few businesses that will be a sure-fire hit. In most cases, the more the potential you have of losing your money, the bigger your returns. (The stock market is the perfect example of this.)
