Why do we have to pay to e-file when it saves the government money?

It seems ridiculous to have to pay for something that streamlines the work of the IRS. Even with the capital investment to set it up, it should pay for itself quickly.

YEP. But where are you paying an efile fee? Go to irs.gov and free efile. Go to Jackson Hewitt--they'll charge you to prepare your taxes, but nothing to efile. The government processes returns and refunds much more quickly with e-filed returns than with paper ones. Saves manhours, but costs for lots of computer equipment and programmers.

Because some numbskull did it that way.

The IRS didn't want to write their own tax preparation software so they offload it to private industry. Private industry expects to get paid so they collect it in transmission fees.
