Solo-working mother with bad credit history?

i started working a year ago, i am solo-parenting a 7 yr old and 2 yr old, I work full-time . i have bad credit history, with no new debts added since 3 yrs ago. i am now on top of my finances, sitting on a good wage, and paying back (slowly) old debts. Is there any way I can get a low limit credit card for emergencys???

first of all good girl for sticking to a budget that allowed you to do what you have been doing -- go to your local bank and ask to talk to the manager and i am sure he will assist you in getting a credit card!!!

I found that the credit card continental finance is a pretty good one. Mine is $300 limit and monthly payment is always $50 dollars. My boyfriend has platinum credit card and is $300. But his monthly payments vary. Hope this helps.

The best thing to do is call your bank or other banks in your area. Explain your situation and what you need.
I remember reading a question like this in Michelle Singletary's column and online chat at the Washington Post website (washingtonpost.com). I think she said a bank sometimes can issue a credit card but require you to keep the limit of the card in a bank account. So it's sort of like a debit card but really is a credit card.
But if they did that, you'd still have to fund that emergency fund yourself. Michelle would say that you have to keep a fund for emergencies anyway - that you don't touch. Read her, she's great!

I'm not sure where you live but many banks, Wells Fargo is one of them, offer a type of prepaid credit card. (NO not a savings!) Most call it a secured line of credit or secure credit card. Basically you pay it in advance and it's sitting there linked to your card for you to use if and when you need it. If you use it responsibly it is also a great way to help rebuild your credit. Eventually you should then be able to apply for a regular card from a major provider like Capital One, Discover etc.

There are more that a few lenders who specialize in credit cards for people with bad credit. You just have to look a little harder than most people have to.

And getting a card after you've had a few problems doesn't necessarily mean that you have a higher than normal rate. Like I said, you'll just have to compare between credit lines, yearly fees, and interest percentages. Just make sure you do your homework BEFORE you commit, and you'll be fine.
