In Australia is there a limit on how long a credit agency keep on chasing an old debt that is owed to them?

hello , does anyone know what happens to old unpaid debts that are owed to a Bank, finance company, store card, etc etc,? to be specific over 10 years ago i had a debt with a finance company, i got sick . lost my job, place to live, etc etc , to cut a long story short no one (like a debt collector)was able to contact me so they can recover their money from me, according to the law how long does my name stay blacklisted in the debt report? and how long does a debt collecting agency can keep their old bad debts on their files? please no funny comments, and second guessing here, only those in the know please , thank you .
