How do I record the journal entry for a Special Disbursement from an equity fund?

This is from equity stock we own as an investments. The special disbursement is one made at the end of the year. How do I know if it is a return on the investment or simply income?

If you're in the US, your 1099 will tell you the character(s) of the distribution--ordinary dividend, qualifying dividend, capital gain and/or return of capital.
