If I wanted to start my own private equity firm, would becoming an investment banker be a good introduction?

Certainly. Banks have exposure to many different kinds of businesses and good investment bankers will gain a keen understanding of them such that they very often end up setting up ther own Private equity firms.

From a risk reward persepctive it's a good idea as you get paid while you learn about the business!

no start working for a Private Equity firm.
