Help with brokerages! Should I choose Vanguard or Fidelity?

I won't be trading much - I just want to buy a few index funds and mutual funds and let them sit for a while through a Roth IRA

overall costs charged against the funds is lower at Vanguard. compare returns on similar funds that you are interested in and see who will be the winner. however, it is not enough to make the decision. Fidelity has the advantage of having some retail locations that might make your life easier.

I mostly use Vanguard but have accounts at Schwab & Fidelity. If you are not trading, go with Vanguard.

btw - from the other answer: Brown & Co is now owned by Etrade.

Neither. Brown|Co has better rates. I'm assuming by "index funds" you mean exchange-traded funds.

Use Scottrade. You would have a hard time finding a better, less expensive trading house. $7 for stock trades, including limit trades. No requirement for large volume of trading to get the best rate.
