Fidelity offers mutual funds, as well as brokerage services for general stock and bond investments. You can buy fidelity mutual funds through any broker. For example, if you think emerging markets has potential for reasonable growth and not too risky, you can buy the "fidelity emerging market fund" (stock ticker FEMKX) from any broker.

On the other hand, you can open an account with Fidelity and let them handle your IRA money, or provide counseling for your particular investment goals.

If you go to the Fidelity.com site, and look for mutual funds, and look at the different fund groups, you can pretty much find a fund that has investments in a sector or group of businesses that you might find interesting, without having to invest in any single stock. Mutual funds diversify the risk over several investments (stocks) and this tends to reduce the impact of any one stocks gains or losses.

Fidelity has a good repututation.

buy BRKB . It will only go higher. Warren Buffet is the best.

Start with maxing out your 401k if possible. IRA if not or in addition if you still have more cash. In there, tax free, you can buy mutual funds. Check out morningstar.com for ratings of particular funds. I would also subscribe to MONEY magazine to start learning the basics.
