Foreign investment in Canada? |
Can anybody comment on this? Is there a high level of foriegn invesment? Where I can find more info about this. I've only found the government site as a reliable source of information. Thanks. No, there is not a lot of foreign investment in Canada. The currency has not been devalued like ours has so our companies are more attractive. The world currency is the US Dollar and other countries want to dump dollars so they buy our companies. There is a fair amount of investment in Canada from the U.S. The tax laws change in 2011 regarding their trusts, which were a very good way of getting a high % return on investment. After that date they will be taxed as normal corporations for the most part. There also is the 15% tax on dividends (distributions) received withheld when the distribution is paid which must be claimed when filing your 1040s at the end of the year or you will lose the 15%. Even with the new tax laws coming there are still some very good Canadian trusts, banks, utilities, etc. to invest in. Look at CNE, BTO, or just search "Canadian income trusts" and you will get information. |
