What is the career progression of someone in asset management at a mutual or hedge fund? |
What is the career progression of someone in asset management at a mutual or hedge fund? Typically, you start out as an investment analyst analysing stocks. For equities, you could be asked to be a sector specialist or you could be a generalist (allowing you to look across many sectors). Sometimes you are geographically oriented (e.g. Asia Pacific). As an analyst, you will conduct research and do valuation work to make recommendations to portfolio managers or portfolio teams. If you do this really well, you will be promoted to take on more responsibility. This could mean heading up the research activities of a particular sector or a group of related sectors. In many firms, doing well as an analyst eventually could lead to a promotion to be a portfolio manager. Portfolio managers actually invest the assets. Their portfolios are usually based on the recommendations of the investment analysts. The portfolio is constructed to provide good returns relative to the risk assumed. As a portfolio manager, you will probably have a marketing function as well (e.g. raise money from clients). |
