REIT mutual fund and portfolio diversification? |
I know that REIT's (I use Vanguard) are considered equity funds, BUT would it be better to view and place these more as bond funds?. Their behavior seems to be a combination of both equity and bond funds but it seems like it might be better to place these in the bond side of my portfolio If you buy them primarily for their income like I do, then consider them as "fixed income" investments, therefore similar to bonds. Also, I would suggest buying a few actual REIT's instead of the mutual funds. You are lookin for income, so why share 1.0% or even more with a mutual fund manager? Buying 6 or 8 good ones is like having your own fund. To some extent but they are too volatile to be bonds. Have been headed just 1 way so seem safer than are. Should be using a closed end investment co like IGR or RRE; etc instead of a mutual fund to buy Reits. They sell at a discount to asset value which helps a lot. RIET's are hard assets and should be held as such in your portfolio. Neither a bond or a true equity but most programs will put it in as an equity. Outlook is mixed for 2007. Study the forecasts and watch the fed. |
