On Disability age 48 w/ $100 to invest a mth, is something like INGdirect my best bet or what?

This would be my only investment . I lost 75% of my 401k in the Enron deal. It was a self contributing + profit sharing invested in either mutual funds or money market. I'm not very financially literate, I could'nt even tell you the difference. But what I did'nt lose I had to live off of for the 2 yrs. that I had to wait for my Disability to be approved. I had to file bankruptcy due to excessive doctor bills and no income for 2 yrs. I am just now getting to where I,m able to start investing a little bit. All I have is my paid for cabin, car, truck, medicare, and a Social Security ck. that just pays the bills and thats it. I even lost my life insurance policy, so I 've got to start doing something. And right now it can't be to risky. Any help is appreciated. Thanx!!!

Sorry to hear about your problem with Enron. I suspect you were heavily in the company stock. If you were invested in money markets or even mutual funds, you would have been better insulated from Enron's demise.

If you can take no risk, or stand the stock market volatility, then you should be in CD's down at the bank. However if you want to grow your money, then the stock market is the place to be.

For a small amount, you can begin investing in TRowe Price's mutual funds. For $250 initial deposit, and monthly contributions, you can open an account with them. TRRIX Retirement Income & RPBAX Balanced are diversified mutual funds with TRP. The 1st is very conservative with 40% stocks, and 60% bonds/fixed income. The 2nd is more agressive with 60% stocks and 40% bonds.

Might not hurt to educate yourself on money & investing. Check out 'Investing for Dummies' by Eric Tyson. It will teach you some of the basics - stocks, bonds, mutual funds, diversification, asset allocation, expenses, etc. I own this book myself.
