How do i report my grad school fellowship to the irs?

its from a university in MA however i was living in CA while receiving the funds. So, do i report this as CA or MA income?
The only other income i have is from a little grant that i got from the school for around 1k. They sent me a 1099misc for this and put the 1k in box 3 "other income." The school doesnt send any forms for the fellowship income...

Whether your fellowship is taxable or not depends on the purpose for which it was used. Room, board and travel are all taxable. If you are a candidate for a degree at an eligible educational institution, tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment are non-taxable. Refer to page 4 of IRS Publication 970 for more detail:

You don't report your fellowship as either CA or MA income. If state taxes are due, you pay them to the state in which you were living.
