Can I afford to buy a camper and a truck?

I'm looking at a 2001 F-350 Diesel Truck w/45k miles and a 28' Starcraft travel trailer for a grand total of $32000. Our household income is around $102k and we have about 6+ months of emergency fund and no debt other than our house. I figured I'd get a 5 year loan on about $30000 and my minimum payments would be around $625. Insurance will be $100/mo on the truck and $115 for 6/mo on the camper. Outdoor storage for the camper will be $30/mo. I figure I could redirect 14% of the 20% i'm putting into my 401k, some of the money i'm putting into my Roth IRA and emergency fund and pay this loan off in around 3 years by paying around $1200-$1500/mo as often as possible. The F350 would only get driven when we go camping so we won't have to pay for much gas in that beast. I'm struggling with this because it seems like such a big purchase, and is only going to depreciate. I guess the real question is how much we'll use it and enjoy it. Only time will tell?

Buy a cabin or a condo somewhere you like to vacation . It will not depreciate like a camper and truck will . At the end of 10 years you will have next to zero resale value . That is really a dumb investment my friend .

I have an F150 and a 26 ft Salem, but I drive my truck
to work everyday and also use it once a month pulling the
camper. go for it if you have the money. The insurance sounds a little high though, mine is only 100.00 a year.

If your not going to use it much.. I would say heck no don't get it.. But if you feel as tho you and your family will enjoy it and more than likely go camping a lot. I would def get it.. good luck and have fun ;)

Here's a test ... if you can comfortably put that $900 or whatever a month into a savings account for six months without touching that money, yes, you can afford it and you'll have a $5,000 dent into that $30,000 purchase as a down payment. You are right... the real question is how much you'll use it. I think that's the most important question for a $900/month purchase. That $10,000 a year of payments and extra costs could pay for four nice vacations a year without the gas and maintenance expense. But, it's YOUR money.

If you can cut down on other expenses, sure it looks good. But if you have to spend your retirement money, or future retirement money, then it doesn't look as good.

Considering the numbers you present, you might feel better going to see a financial planner in your area - that way you can get a good second opinion, and maybe avoid buyer's remorse.

also, you might want the planner to double check your planned expenses during the planned use time of your emergency fund.
