Should I file a return for my child who earned less than $5000 for the benefit from economic stimulus plan?

My child earned just over $3000, no taxes were taken from her income in 2007. Though this is below the $5150 requiring a tax return, would she stand to benefit from the economic stimulus plan if it is passed? We're not trying to profit from our child ;-), but are interested in putting that toward her college fund if she qualifies (we do not likely qualify under the income limits).

As you stated she is not required to file a return. Since she had no federal income tax taken out of her wages there is no need for her to. I assume that you are claiming your child as a dependent on your income tax return. This will eliminate her from receiving any money from the economic stimulus package (assuming it passes). What this will do under the current plan is to allow you to receive an extra $300 for her as a dependent. It will added to your amount and be under your name. You can choose what to do with the money once it comes in.

Dependents won't get the stimulus.

since he won't owe any tax on his own - he won't get a rebate check - so he doesn't have to file - you will get a rebate check of $300 for claiming him

You're confused.
Did you take a dependency exemption for the child? Then we're talking $3400 not $5150.
What age? In school?

The Senate hasn't passed its version yet--it's still undecided and just talk at this point.

If you claimed her on your 2007 taxes you will get the rebate for her IF it becomes law.

Unless she received a W2 she is required to file a return as self employed individuals must file is they earn more than 400.00
