Interest or dividends?

Please clarify: For income tax purposes, does a mutual fund or ETF which invests in bonds produce dividends, as opposed to the interest that you would receive from directly owning an individual bond?

These are "dividends". But they are taxed the same. You've not invested in the bonds, but in the fund. The fund pays dividends, the bonds paid interest to the fund.
