Every year we have to pay taxes on 4/15. Shouldn't our return come out to $0 owed, if not get a refund? |
My husband receives a W-2 from his job plus retirement income. He pays taxes on this throughout the year. I receive a 1099 from my business plus income from a trust fund. I pay estimated taxes about twice a year because I don't always have the lump sum every quarter. Should husband increase his withholding so that we don't have to pay extra taxes in April? If we don't get a refund, does it mean we are doing something wrong? No, it's only an issue if you owe more than $1,000 at the end of each year. If you owe less than that, it's just a manner of whether you'd like to have a little bit more during the year and paying a larger amount on 4/15, or having a little less each week and paying a smaller amount (or getting a refund) on 4/15. If the amount owed is small, it's probably not worth worrying about. If it is significant, either you need to make larger estimated tax payments or he needs to withhold more or both. You should try for a small amount of overpaid taxes. |
