Can I get a federal grant to fund a 4-H project for 4-H kids?

I am trying to start a small animal farm, consisting of a 2 bedroom home, a good barn or machine shed, with water lines to the shed or barn and electricity. Would like for the farm to be at least 20 acres, so I can rotate pastures for the animals. Would need good fencing. Would also like to raise some cattle myself for profit to keep this small animal farm working and for income. If anyone knows the answers to these questions please let me know.

I am not sure about a federal loan. 4-H is a big deal for the kids where I live. The kids are able to get a loan from the local bank for their 4-H project to get an animal. They show the animal at the fair and sell it. They make enough money to pay the bank and have money to spare.

good Luck

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Once you find a grant where you can qualify, apply for it at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Also check for private grants or grants from private foundations. The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.
