I'll looking to compare the best tax free income funds available - suggestions?

If you are talking about municipal bond funds, I think Vanguard has some of the best. In bond funds, low fees are very important, and Vanguard has some of the lowest.

i deal with american funds, they are trading between 32 and 45 dollas a share depending on the fund. i have 4 different funds with them and ive had a good return in the two years i been buying them

Scottrade.com has one of the best screeners available for municipal bond funds. These are in essence tax free funds, meaning that if you purchase a municipal bond fund in your state of residence you will be free from state and federal taxes. the avg return for this type of fund is approx. 5% annually.

You have some great answers so far but they are neglecting one aspect of the fund market. Closed end mutual funds that are traded like stocks. I think there are more than a 100 available. Some are leveraged and some are not. They leverage by selling preferred stock. Some sell at healthy discount to the next assets also as much as 10% and more.

There is one thing you need to be aware of maybe two things. 1. interest rates are rising therefore you can expect debt based funds to fall in price. 2. the dollar is falling. That means the U S based assets are loosing value relative to the rest of the world.
