Opening acct with scottrade..best way to invest small sum of money?

I'm an college student and i'm planning to invest small sums of money regularly into a scottrade acct. What is the best way to invest the money. I'm thinking foreign equity/emerging markes/latin america mutual funds offered by scottrade..is that a good idea?

Don't invest in anything you don't understand. All the things you listed can be fantastic long-term investments. They can also be a disaster.

I recommend you learn more about the subject and research investments until you have a better understanding. Although there is great information on the Internet it's really hard to tell the difference between the good advice and bad advice. You should get a book or two written by QUALIFIED professionals to assist you in this process.

I am very much in favor of mutual funds, but you need to know how they work and understand the pros and cons of investing in them before you put your hard earned money in.

don't forget about dividend paying stocks. i prefer REITS. (real estate investment trusts).
