What is the best way to invest my 401(k)?

What funds should I invest in and at what percentages?

I hate to sound negative here, but that's kind of like walking into a Doctor's office and announcing "how do I get well?". No one can properly advise you on how to invest your 401K without know things like:
1. Your time horizon, i.e. how long will you work before you retire and need this money.
2. Your age
3. Your family needs.
4. Your aversion to risk, i.e. are you the type investor that needs to look at their investment performance every week and sweats when it's not going up?
5. What investments does your 401k plan offer? Some have few options, some have many. What are the investment options your 401k offers?

These are some of the things a trained investment advisor would ask you. These are some of the things any investment guidance book would tell you.

My advice, go to the library or bookstore, buy a book on basic investing.

to me, u should put a 25% of it in the bank, u know, for the rainy days. 50% for ur kids[or furture ones], and the other 25% is for u! have a good day^.^ Report It

CD's Mrkt - sideways to negative next 18 mths. Inflation high, housing starts,sales- sliding. Bby Bmers retiring, downsizing homes, moving to safer invstmt. Momentum can't be stopped. Short term CD's or foreign investment. Mrkt not going to crash, better opportunities out there. Report It

Not to be rude but have you people read the question?
Your company probably offers 5 to 15 different investment choices from cash to int'l equities/bonds. Diversification and your age are key. You should research all the funds and see what you are really buying. I like yahoo finance. Report It

I'm not sure what's your position at the moment. However, in his newest book, Donald Trump advices people not to invest in 401(k) plan unless you have a salary at least $150,000/year because that plan works only like a saving account rather than tru retirement plan. Report It

INSTEAD OF DOING A 401K TAKE THE SAME AMOUNT YOU WOULD HAVE INVESTED IN THAT AND PUT IT IN A ROTH IRA - IT'LL ALL BE TAX FREE WHEN YOU GET IT OUT...401K YOU'LL PAY TAX ON ALL OF IT Report It

U shd inv to the mx in the 401k, then mx out the Roth, then if eligible cont in a IRA. To answer your question, if u are not going to retire in the next 5 years, half in Tot Bond Mrkt and half in Tot Stk Mrkt.or S&P 500, but wait for any correction since the market is high now.
