Should i buy a acre of residential land or invest in mutual funds i am 53 and retired.?

What is your interest in the land? Do you plan on building on it? I've heard of so many stories of people buying land that they plan on building on several years from now and so many times things happen. People die, get divorced, move, change jobs, etc. Do not buy vacant land unless you plan on building on it within two years or can rent it out today. Buy the mutual fund. Much lower transactional costs and much more liquid.

I would do a little research on mutual funds. About 75% of them under perform the market. All of them have sales fees, usually between 1% and 2%, and some have sales loads.

Without seeing the land and knowing what is close by and what the location is like, it is hard to give objective advice.

Do a little research and make a sound decision. You might look at ETF's or REIT's if you are interested in Real Estate.

Good Luck

When you're retired, the golden rule would have to be 'cash rich, asset poor '. You don't want your money being tied up in any kind of investment. Cash should be readily available when you need it. I would suggest you putting money in the T-Bill or Government Bonds. You collect some interest, but your capital is preservered. It is very safe.
