How do I pick which funds to invest my 401k $ in?

I'm 26... how do I figure out which funds are high risk, low risk, etc.??

If your young, pick a few high risk investments, and a few medium risk. the little you will loose if it fails will not be a big deal in the scope of things. as you get older, change it to more stable investments. THe big thing is, once you pick it, FORGET IT!! do not take a loan against it, do not change it around every time the market bounces, just leave it alone. change it maybe every 5yrs... why? because if you do like me you will have 200+K in your 401k by the time you are 30. Otherwise you will end up like the other morons and have 10k and wonder how your going to pay back the loan you owe.

Try a lifecycle fund. (i.e. a 2025 fund if you are going to retire in 20 years). Let a professional do it for you.

Choose the one with the highest long term return, small caps or International if you can.

Find the 3 funds that have the best 10 year rate-of-return. Or if 20 year data is available, use that instead.

Anything under 10 years, and the fund doesn't have enough of a track record to be reliable.
