Is there one place to find out if any mutual fund is open to new investors?

In searching for mutual funds to invest in, I often get well into research in a certain fund, only to find out that it is closed to new investors. Is there one website or place to screen mutual funds based on whether they are open to new investors?

Morningstar.com has information on most large mutual funds, and they usually indicate if the fund is closed. See the example below for the closed Explorer fund.

Avoid mutual funds. The way they're set up means you don't get as much return as with stocks.

Mutual funds are run by managers who decide where the fund invests money and when, and has employees working for him. All of these ppl, the manager and employees have to get paid. This cuts into your earnings. As a result, the fund is less attractive, so they pay advisers to recommend them and continue paying them as long as you own the fund (this further cuts into your earnings), and they do, saying they'll give you diversity and protect you (and your adviser) if there's a downturn in the market. The problem is, the cost of the protection outweighs the benefits of it. If you want diversity, buy direct with stocks in different industries. This cuts out the middleman of the mutual fund manager, employees, and your adviser.

Doing research to find good companies to invest in is easier than ever with the Internet and the variety of tools available for analyzing companies and finding out financial data. Yahoo!'s stock screener is easy to use and has a lot of information to help you learn more about how to value a company. Don't be lazy, do some homework and buy stocks, your portfolio will pay you for your effort.
