What sort of Mutual Funds should i invest for a short term ?

I plan to invest in MF for 1 year.And i expect returns on it.
What are the kind of funds which suit me ?

Unless it's a money market Mutual Fund I'd suggest never putting money into a stock or bond Mutual Fund unless you had a time horizon of 7 years +. Most Mutual Fund companies would tell you the same.

What's worse;

Asking an investing question like this from strangers, whose qualifications and motives can never be known.

Take that year and learn investing. Until you do, you'll be making one mistake after another. No doubt that will translate into losing money.

If the return must be positive, you had better go with a money market fund.
The general rule for stock funds is five years. For bond funds perhaps three years is sufficient.

For short term, the only suitable MF is Money Market. But bank D/A pay at least as much and is more convenient.

As the other answers indicate, the only sensible choice for you is a money market fund. No other type of mutual fund can be trusted to produce positive returns in any given year.

As far as your options, I would suggest Vanguard's Prime Money Market (VMMXX), which is currently yielding 5.14%. VMMXX is consistently among the top yielding money market funds.

I probably wouldn't even bother with a mutual fund for such a short horizon. I recommend ING savings which pays 4.5% on savings and can quickly be transferred between your checking account and ING. After one year you can keep the savings account and enjoy the interest.

Pick a money market account from www.vanguard.com. They have the lowest cost funds. Your time frame is too short to invest in stocks and bonds.
