With more than 6000 to choose from, it is not surprising that you may be confused. There are many, many good mutual funds. Contact Vanguard, T.Rowe Price, American Century, tell them your situation (how much you want to invest immediately, how much you want to invest monthly, etc), and ask them to send you some information about their funds. You also may want to read books by John Bogle, Peter Lynch and others. You may want to split your investment among two or three different funds so that you may compare their results.
