What is a good index fund to invest into?

I'm looking to invest some of my cash into an index fund. Are they worth it? I live in Australia, would a domestic or international fund be better? Has anyone got any advice on index funds, or know any specific funds worth looking into?

Etf. EWA covers your country. EFA covers a good chunk of developed world. I like Australia right now so would focus local if I were you. some diversification in ADX, large cap US, or a S&P 500 index fund like SWPIX is in order, though.
