Should I be paying fees to invest in a 403(b)? I currently pay 5.45% of all money invested.?

That seems really high for your 403b plan. Check that again or explain further. Because you are only paying internal fees for the mutual funds you have in your plan. And if you have an annuity set up with your 403b, again, its just internal fees. Highest internal fees I ever saw in a 403b was ING and they were 2.75%.

Call your Human Resource department and get the exact amount you are paying. Don't try to compare these funds/or Annuity on some pricing sheet you found online or even the ones you would buy outside your retirement account. The pricing for your 403b would be different.

And to everybody that said you are paying "no fee", how does the mutual fund companies make money when you invest in their funds through your retirement accounts? For Free?

Why would you be paying fees to invest in your 403B plan? The only monies that should be deducted are those monies that you are contributing. For example, when you filled out the paperwork you requested 2% of your gross to be deducted and put into your 403B. I never heard of such a thing and I worked in the public sector (not for profit) for a quite a few years.

Nobody invests your money for free. The fees will depend on who the 403b is with and what its invested in.

no, you shouldn't pay any fee at all
