For most most people who want to make investments in the share market, either a mutual funds for index funds are an excellent alternative. There are litterally thousands to choose from. For an investor with less than about $50,000 to invest these alternatives allow good diversification of investments. A person can invest in one or several index funds and/or mutual funds. The only requirement is that the investor needs to meet the minimum investment amount specified for the fund. Sometimes this amount is in the order of $2500. Sometimes less and sometimes but infrequently more. Some index funds are sold like stocks and one can purchase as little as one share.

Yahoo finance has a good mutual fund screener to search for mutual funds.
