What's the best way to find an accountant, and how much should you pay for 1040 filing?

I have always filed my own taxes, but this past year I started pursuing a graduate degree part-time as an evening student and want to ensure that I navigate all of the tax implications successfully. I have asked around for referrals from friends, but everyone either files their own taxes or works with someone who isn't a CPA. I have a friend of the family who once got burned using an account who wasn't a CPA, so I want to have the recourse of the certification.

Are there any resources you know of for finding information and/or testimonials about accountants, other than just dialing one at random from the Yellow Pages? Also, what price range should one reasonably expect to pay for preparing a 1040, married/joint, with a few educational expenses and stock investments?

Thanks!

Check with your local state CPA society (link below) to find a CPA in your area. The pricing depends on the complexity of the return. Call them and ask for quotes.

RichManPoorMan gave the best answer. Most CPAs that do taxes ARE legitimate tax experts. However, being a CPA does not mean you know any more about taxes that the seasonal workers at H & R Block. I personally know a CPA that has his personal taxes done by H & R block. Report It

CPAs are certified in accounting. The majority of accounting has little to do with taxes. Report It

First off call around and get quotes from different tax preparers. Then when you get there get the amt in w r i t i n g. As later they can come back and claim they never said that amt and charge you a different amt.

An excellent way of finding a CPA is go to your local successful merchants in your community. Go to your local Starbucks retailer, grocery store, needlepoint store, etc.
and talk to the owners of the businesses. You will eventually obtain positive feedback
as to which CPA you should consult.

Try to stay away from CPA's that have multiple names ie., Berkowitz, Berkowitz, Fielder, Cohen & Davidoff, etc., Usually these firms have high overhead and very high
rates. Sole proprietors are good.

Most CPA's charge you on an hourly basis with a minimum fee for tax prep.

In your case, the average fee to prepare your return should be a minimum of $ 250.

you dont necessarily need a CPA to prepare a 1040. I am a non-CPA accountant but have a lot of education and experience with
personal income taxes and can handle 99% of the 1040 issues out there. dont let one bad family friend experience deter you, there could be another side to that story. I have built up a nice small practice via word of mouth by family and friends. From the personal info you provided your taxes are not complex at all, and I would charge $125 to do your taxes (Pennsylvania).
