Will you accept this job if you were me? |
I got an offer from an international growing investment management firm to work in their Tokyo branch for 4,500,000 YEN / year which equals to $38,000!! A big slap on the face considering the company is pretty reputable on Wall St. You need to research the cost of living in both areas before you make a decision. $55K/yr in San Jose will probably have you living on peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you are paying your own rent. You also need to understand the tax situation. If you work the Tokyo job, are the USA and Japan both going to tax your income? Yes!Cosidering the details that you provided.Check out more about this job. When you get the ''pro's'' and ''con's'' it will be better at deciding.(Im sorry i didnt know the average salary in Tokyo)Good Luck! I would stay on the west coast. Japan is so crowded and remember speak Japanese so you would be foriegn and many Japanese dont like foriegners, like when I went to Japan I must admit, it would be pretty cool to live in Tokyo, but I hear the cost of living is pretty high there too. I guess it all depends on where you are in your life and where you see yourself. I say if you are not leaving behind too much in your current life, "To Tokyo I go!!". Once in a lifetime experience. If I was you, I would accept the offer for $55 on west coast. The average salary in Tokyo is approximately $50 k of U.S.. I would also inquire about the incentives and bonuses in both jobs. Sometimes, the company will pay for house, car and children tuition (for reputable school) for an employee working for their international branch, so if your company is going to do that then I think at the end, both of these offers are equally lucrative. It's really going to have to be determined by what you want and the cost of living in the two areas. It's would be a valuable experience to live in Japan, I would love to have that opportunity but if $38K is not a workable salary then perhaps you may want to go for the west coast. However, the real estate prices are beyond belief out there and if you're planning to purchase a home $55K may not be enough for you. Good luck with your decision! Hellifino the big confused beast. The money is irrelevant and there is absolutely no way anybody can answer this but you. having experiance working in a foriegn country can get you a bigger salary in next job. and it is good experiance.. think like managment for a moment. you see to aplications and one of them worked in tokyo in her past.. who seems more experianced to deal with foriegn clients? think about future jobs... |
