Whats the best bank for a college student?

I'm a college student looking to open an account with another bank. I already have a saccount in a small bank, but I need one that's more accessible and has more benefits for students (interest rates, investment help, student savings, etc). Any suggestions?

There's two lines of thought: community bank with a couple of local location or a large bank with many locations.

If you are looking for one-on-one service with a little understanding if something should come up like an NSF or two, i would recommend a small community bank as they might be more willing to work with you as an individual. Additionally, if you make some mistakes during college which happens more often then one might think- the percussions of such mistakes will probably be much less burdensome as smaller banks usually do not report as often or as timely as larger banks

However, if your finances are solid and you don't expect to need any 'favors' i owuld opt for a larger bank- especially one with a branch location near your parents or someone that is there for you if you need some help. I often recommend that students open an account with a bank having a branch in their hometown for two reasons. First, while going to college it makes it easier for benefactors to make deposits in case of emergencies or need and, second, because you will be able to amintain you account history if you move back home after college. Additionally, if you choose a larger bank, the chances that you will be able to continue your relationship if you move elsewhere after graduation is much more probable. Larger banks usually offer additional services and easier access to funds and information (bill pay, internet banking, etc.)

I don't know what you mean by a bank that is "more" accessible since there are ATM's all over. If you're determined to start another account then look in the yellow pages where you now live and determine which banks are near you (we don't know where you live), give them a call and ask all the questions you want/need to.

From my experience, interest rates, investment help were of no value until I graduated, moved and found a good job. Why do you need student savings if you're paying out for school?

the best bank for a college student is one that you walk past everyday in your travels to class, so it is easy for you to do your banking when you need to....and you can save time and use it for studying
