Alegebra word problem?

investment of 12000 at 6.5% interest on one account and the other5.5% how much should be invested in both accounts so that they earn the same interest?

Here's one way to do it:

You have account A at 6.5% and account B at 5.5%. You want 6.5% of A to equal 5.5% of B. The total investment is 12,000. So, A + B = 12,000. However, you have two variables to solve and it would be much easier if you only had to solve one.

To do this, you can re-arrange the above equation like this:
B = 12,000 - A
Now, you only have to solve for A because B is the same as 12,000 - A.

You can solve it like this:
6.5%A = 5.5%(12,000 - A)
6.5%A = 660 - 5.5%A
6.5%A + 5.5%A = 660
12%A = 660
A = 660 / 12%
A = 5,500

B = 12,000 - A
B = 12,000 - 5,500
B = 6,500

The key to these types of problems is to try to re-arrange your variables to get it down to one variable.
