I want to be an investment banker. Should i major in finance and econ, or accounting and econ?

I go to Rutgers New Brunswick campus. Econ and accounting double major.. Should i change to finance and econ if i want to be an investment banker?

I would recommend finance. Accounting will teach you very basic stuff about investments and investment banking, but finance will give you what you need to know about investments and financing. I was an accounting major, now I work in public accounting, but I would not be able to easily make a switch to investment banking based on my education.

Go for finance!

Finance and econ... Investments is mostly finance, so you definitely MUST have it. Also, accounting is pretty easy, and the required accounting courses are usually sufficient. Finance (corporate finance, derivative assets, etc) is key to investments...

I would recommend a strong emphasis in financial accounting. You need to know where those numbers on the financial statements come from and how they are derived. Some people in finance wish they had more accounting behind them for that reason.

As long as you can prove that you are smart, have good analytical skills, a basic grasp of finance, aggressive, hard-working and have a transcript that shows excellence and some quantitative skills, I think that's whats important. I also think it helps to show that you are up to speed on whats going on in the deal world. I-bankers use power point and excel and some basic finance more than anything else.

More important than what your transcript says though is whether you have connections. Most of the I-banks I know recruited most of their analyst class from the Ivy leagues, MIT and Stanford and some NYU. If the banks do come on to your campus for on campus recruiting, great, but if not, just blasting out resumes is not a high percentage recruiting strategy. Work your alumni connections, family connections, whatever you can to get a leg up.

Good luck!

This isn't one of your choices you listed, but I would drop economics and major in finance and accounting. You are going to need accounting to understand the inner workings of the financial statements. You are going to need finance to create the complicated models you'll be called on to do.

In the end, I don't think it's going to matter. As long as you have good grades and present well in an interview (or know someone), you will have a decent shot at getting a job. They will teach you everything you need to know though a finance and accounting background helps.

You need to be Ivy League to be an Investment Banker.
You also need an MBA and speak at least two languages (Besides english and spanish, of course)
