Can I roll a current account with one of the big investment firms into an online brokerage account?

The account has mutual funds, and I pay taxes as I go by prefference because I want access to the money when I want it. Thanks.

One issue that you might have is with transferring the mutual funds from companies that are adviser based because they will likely not be available from your online broker. In that case you will have to redeem your shares and transfer a money balance instead of the actual mutual fund. They will have lots of no load funds to choose from so you could probably find a no load fund with similar objectives to the mutual funds you currently own.

The other issue is tax timing. You may want to sell the fund before the annual distributions of dividends and capital gains or wait until after the distribution. Depends on your individual situation.

yes

I believe you can, provided you look for the best and reliable broker, and coordinate with your current account bank.

You can do anything you want it is your money ? If you put it into a tax free fund . You can take it out and only pay taxes on the amout you take out . If you are under 59 and a half it will cost you a extra 10 %
