Can I move the money in my investment account to an account on Etrade?

I have money in a Putnam Growth Fund. I am wondering if I can bring all that money to create an account on Etrade or another company like them. Can I do this?

You should be able to move it, but the new account might not be willing to accept shares in the fund. If they don't, you'd have to sell the shares in Putnam Growth and transfer the cash to the broker. (Be aware that the sale will be a taxable event, so if you have gains on the Putnam Growth Fund, you'll have to pay tax on those gains.)

Any broker will be more than happy to help you through the transfer process. I think usually all you have to do is send them an "External Transfer" form which lists the name and address of the company where you currently have the account and your account number. They take care of the actual transferring. It usually takes about 2 or 3 weeks I think.

If you want to keep the shares in Putnam Growth but move them to the broker, you will have to check to see whether they accept them. Some mutual funds are proprietary and can only be held in an account at the company that runs them .

Etrade should be able to hold the Putnam fund.

At the very least, you could sell the Putnam fund and use the procedes to open the Etrade account (be mindful that "b" shares will have a surrender charge).
