IT job Question - please help?

IT contracting - please help / advise??
My partner is an IT consultant and is considering undertaking a contracting position within an investment bank. The pay is very very high鈥nd more than double what he earns now鈥?however, I am a bit worried about job stability鈥? Can anyone share any advice, knowledge? His job will be in London

People may disagree, but the risk in contracting is often directly proportional to the skills of the person. The more highly skilled the person is the easier they will pick up contract work and the less the risk.

Of all the hundreds of contractors I've ever known, I've never known one to be out of work for more than a month or two in the year, that includes the "useless" ones, who can get a lower paid contract in an emergency.

Contracting is highly paid yes but don't forget you loose super, leave, bonuses etc. and you have to weigh that up against a permanent job.

Finance is a pretty solid sector, and if your partner is skilled and motivated to work in that sector, I wouldn't worry too much as long as you've taken those things I mentioned above into account.

London is nice city

Go for it.It will learn and earn more than ever.

actually, that is a tough question.

there are times when ANYTHING in IT is very steady, and there are times when it seems like the whole industry is closing down. then something happens, and it is growing fast again.

It would probably help to find out about the compnay he will be working for/with?

do they keep people around, or do they hire them for a 3 month job, and them fire them till they need them the next time?

Also, you 2 should check to see if his position has benefits like health care, retirement, all sorts of stuff like that.
It is common in the US for a contractor to make twice what the full time employee next to him/her is making, but with no benefits, it is not so great a deal.
