First stock purchase?

hi i am looking to buy some stock for the first time by my self, i already have some stock that was purchased for me by some relatives when i was younger but this will be the first investment that i will have made. I had picked out a stock that will be a good suite for a long term investment and i was wondering is it better to purchase something like this through a broker or go through something online like scottrade? any advice? if i need to be more clear just ask for some clarification and i will get back but hopefully this is enough to get some feedback.

Well, the first thing I would find out is whether or not the company has a direct purchase plan. If they do, I would buy it that way. If not, then there are a plethora of discount brokerages that charge decent commissions, and there are several online brokers that are cheaper, but don't have as much support as the real world brokerages. Again, check to see if they have a direct purchase program first. That can save you more money and allow you to invest more. Good luck!

Scottrade is cheap... a full service broker can cost you $250. An online account is easy to deal with. =)

Scottrade is a broker. If it's a one time purchase, seek a broker with the lowest commission rates and take possession of the shares, otherwise they will charge you a maintenance fee.

I like TDAmeritrade, but I hear Scottrade is very good.

Right now, it appears that the stock market is in a free fall. So it takes a lot of guts to start buying now. But it is definitely better to be buying today than to have been buying 3 months ago.

Open a brokerage account at Zecco.

I use Scottrade and have been very pleased. It also has alot of nice learning tools to use for free. I have friends who use Etrade and Ameritrade

so if i were to use something like scottrade to i take ownership of the stock like i could with a broker? or what would the advantage be of using an online place vs a broker when buying a stock for a long term investment? i am new to stock investments so i appreciate all the help.
