What types of investments do banks generally make?

Banks invest a lot in Government bonds, GNMA's and Agency paper. The majority of their portfolios are usually in GNMA's and Collatoralized Mortgage Obligations (CMO's).

Check out this link for information on all FDIC insured banks. http://www2.fdic.gov/SDI/SOB/ Under Industry, check all FDIC-Insured Institutions and then for Reports check Securities then Run Report.

From what I understand, banks trade the 4X or foreign exchange market. Now the 4X market has opened up to the little guy by allowing you to get in with only a few hundred bucks. From the research I have done on the 4X market, it looks like the best investment route for me. But 鈥?be careful. You need to be properly trained before trading. They say that 85% of people lose all of their money within their first 30 days. Look up 4X Trainer on the search engine. The broker houses claim that over 80% of their students still have accounts after 2 years. Not bad compared to the 85% losers. Good luck!
