What does a product controller do?

I see they are in high demand at the investment banks and are commanding rather chunky salaries, but what sort of products require contolling?

the banks these days call thier loans "products".
As there are so many different types of loans that offer this but not that and so on they need people to survey the products to make sure that the bank will be able to draw customers with the features of the "product" without being out of pocket
