Response from companies?

hi guys,

i applied with the major investment banks and consultancies.
now, that i can barely await whether im going to be invited for an interview: does anyone know if everyones contacted? what i mean is: obviously successful candidates are being contacted to arrange an interview. but are unsuccessful candidates contacted as well? like in the form of: "sorry, we're not gonna invite you but good luck with other applications."
i find that would prove "good manners." but also at least you know it for certain then and dont anxiously await that they might still contact you...

any experiences?

Hi, I work for a financial services firm. Very unfortunately, it's impossible to get back to all candidates as so many resumes are received.

To increase your chances, it's best to try to find a contact at that company so you have a person to answer your questions, coach you, check with HR, etc. Try your school's alumni directory or career services center. If you happen to have an affinity group, try to get hooked up with associations (e.g. Hispanic banking networks, Women on Wall St, etc.).

If you're having trouble finding a job in this difficult economy, try a headhunter in a city like NY. They have more inroads with the banks and consulting firms. If you don't have enough experience for headhunters (some will take you with no experience, but others won't), then consider a temp-to-perm role. Our bank hires temps who perform very well.

In my experience very very few employers will contact you if you're not chosen for interview.

In a year of unemployment, I probably got about 2-3 of the 'sorry you weren't successful we'll keep you on file' letters, most just don't bother; the bigger the company the less likely you'll get a reply.
